Air Racing has been around, since “the daring young men (and women) in their flying machines” first took to the air in the 1920’s. This aspect of aviation has included events ranging from races around pylons to races between continents. There have been races between London (UK) and Johannesburg (SA) and event London and Sydney, Australia!

Perhaps one of the most famous of these races was the Schneider Trophy”. The race was significant in advancing aeroplane design, particularly in the fields of aerodynamics and engine design, and would show its results in the best fighters of World War II.

The streamlined shape and the low drag, liquid-cooled engine pioneered by Schneider Trophy designs are most obvious in the British Supermarine Spitfire, the North American P-51 Mustang.

Pylon Racing has become immensely popular, with the annual event at the Reno Air Races and also the various “over the water” race series around the world!
